  1. SANParks rest camps open bookings 11 months in advance — book early for school holidays.
  2. Self-drive is very popular and affordable; rent a car in Johannesburg and drive in.
  3. Sabi Sands and Timbavati private reserves have no fences with Kruger, but animals roam freely between them.
  4. Download the SANParks app for live animal sighting maps updated by other visitors.
  5. Budget tip: bring your own food and braai at camp — Kruger's communal kitchens are excellent.
  6. The southern section (Lower Sabie to Skukuza) has the highest animal density.

Where to Stay in Kruger National Park FAQ

Rest camps are fenced and completely safe. Private reserve lodges are unfenced but have trained staff. Wild animals sometimes appear near camp, which adds to the atmosphere.
