About the Southern Elephant Seal

The southern elephant seal is the largest seal species in the world, with bulls weighing up to 4,000 kg — as heavy as a car. Males develop enormous, trunk-like proboscises that amplify their territorial roars during brutal breeding-season battles. They are extraordinary divers, capable of reaching depths of 2,000 metres and staying submerged for up to 2 hours.

Fun Facts

  • Bull elephant seals can weigh up to 4,000 kg — roughly 5 times heavier than the largest polar bear.
  • They can dive to 2,000 metres depth and hold their breath for up to 2 hours, making them one of the deepest-diving mammals.
  • During the breeding season, a dominant bull may mate with up to 50 females — but most males never get to breed at all.

Photography Tips for Southern Elephant Seal

Elephant seals are approachable during breeding season but maintain 5 metres minimum. Use a wide-angle lens to capture massive bulls in their landscape context. Low angles emphasise their enormous size.

Safety Guide

Bull elephant seals are dangerous during breeding season — they can move surprisingly fast and crush humans with their bulk. Always maintain at least 5 metres distance and never get between a bull and his harem.
