When to Visit Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater offers remarkable year-round wildlife viewing thanks to its enclosed ecosystem that keeps resident populations of lions, elephants, and black rhinos inside. The dry season from June to October provides the clearest views and easiest game drives. December to February coincides with wildebeest calving on the nearby Serengeti plains.

The best time to visit Ngorongoro Crater is June to October during the dry season. December to March brings flamingos to the crater lake and green season scenery.
The crater rim sits at 2,300 metres and can be surprisingly cold at 5 to 15 degrees, especially at night. The crater floor is warmer at 20 to 25 degrees.
March to May and November offer lower lodge rates and fewer safari vehicles in the crater. Travelling during shoulder or low seasons can save you 20 to 40% on accommodation and tours while still providing excellent wildlife viewing.
Peak season at Ngorongoro Crater is July to September when wildlife viewing on the crater floor is at its best. Book accommodation and tours well in advance for peak dates, as popular lodges and camps sell out months ahead.
