Bengal Tiger FAQ
Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan is the most famous for tiger sightings due to its open, dry terrain and habituated tigers. Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh has India's highest tiger density. Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand and Kanha in Madhya Pradesh are also top-tier choices with sighting rates above 60%.
Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Pench, and Tadoba are India's top five tiger parks. Each offers a different landscape — from Ranthambore's ancient fort backdrop to Tadoba's teak forests in Maharashtra. For fewer crowds and excellent sighting odds, Tadoba and Pench are increasingly popular alternatives to the busier parks.
A jeep safari permit costs ₹1,500–₹2,500 ($18–$30) per person per drive, with two drives daily. Mid-range lodges near parks charge $80–$200/night. A 3-day safari package with accommodation, meals, and 6 game drives typically runs $400–$1,200 per person. Luxury camps like Sher Bagh in Ranthambore start at $500/night.
In prime parks like Bandhavgarh and Ranthambore during peak season (March–May), sighting success rates are 60–80% over a 3-day visit with two daily drives. The hot pre-monsoon months are best because tigers visit waterholes frequently. A single drive has roughly a 30–50% chance, so multiple drives significantly improve your odds.
October to June is the main safari season, with March to May being the absolute best for tiger sightings. As temperatures rise above 40°C, tigers emerge to drink and cool off at waterholes, making them easier to spot. Parks close during the monsoon (July–September) due to heavy rains and flooding.
A 200–500 mm or 100–400 mm telephoto lens is essential, as tigers can be 30–100 metres away. Shoot at fast shutter speeds (1/500s+) to capture movement. A monopod or beanbag helps stabilise your lens in the open-top jeep. Bring extra batteries — dust and heat drain power faster than expected.
