Galapagos giant tortoises are the largest tortoises in the world, weighing up to 417 kg and living for over 100 years. These gentle giants were instrumental in Charles Darwin's development of the theory of evolution. Each island's tortoise population evolved distinct shell shapes adapted to local vegetation.
