Komodo National Park FAQ
Yes, with a certified park ranger guide — it's mandatory and included in park fees. Komodo dragons are the world's largest lizards (up to 3 metres) and are wild predators, but attacks on tourists are extremely rare. Rangers carry forked sticks and know dragon behaviour well. Stay on marked trails, keep your distance (minimum 2 metres), and follow all ranger instructions.
April to December offers the best weather, with calm seas and good visibility for diving (20–30 metres). July to August is peak tourist season. The wet season (January–March) brings rougher seas and occasional boat cancellations, but fewer crowds and manta ray aggregations at Mawan. Dragons are active year-round but more visible in the dry season.
Fly to Labuan Bajo in western Flores (daily flights from Bali, 1 hour, $60–$150). From Labuan Bajo, boat trips to Komodo and Rinca islands take 2–4 hours. Day trips, multi-day liveaboard cruises, and private speedboat charters are all available. There's no accommodation on the islands — you sleep on boats or in Labuan Bajo.
Day trips ($50–$80) cover Komodo or Rinca island plus a snorkel stop and suit time-limited visitors. Liveaboard trips (2–4 days, $200–$600+) explore multiple islands, remote dive sites, and include Pink Beach, Padar Island viewpoint, and manta ray encounters. For the full experience and best diving, a 3-day liveaboard is highly recommended.
Komodo is world-class diving territory, with over 1,000 fish species and 260 coral species. Highlights include manta ray cleaning stations at Makassar Reef, strong-current drift dives at Batu Bolong, and macro life at Tatawa Besar. Currents can be strong — most sites suit intermediate to advanced divers. Beginners can enjoy calmer sites like Siaba Besar.
Komodo National Park entry fees are IDR 350,000 (~$22) per person on weekdays. Day trips from Labuan Bajo cost $50–$80. Budget liveaboards run $150–$300 for 2 days. Premium dive liveaboards cost $200–$400/day. Labuan Bajo accommodation ranges from $15 hostels to $200+ luxury hotels. A 3-day trip averages $300–$1,000 per person.
