Start With the Habitat

Planning a Wildlife Trip to Indonesia

Indonesia spans thousands of islands with orangutan forests, Komodo dragon habitat, coral reefs, mangroves, volcanic landscapes, and marine migration routes. Borneo, Sumatra, Komodo, and eastern reef regions are separate journeys rather than easy additions to one itinerary.

Build around one island group and include weather or boat buffers. Park permits, domestic transport, and sea conditions matter more than straight-line distance, particularly for liveaboards and remote forest lodges.

Wildlife Locations in Indonesia

These field locations are referenced by our animal guides. Viewing windows are approximate and should be checked locally before booking.

Tanjung Puting National Park

Verify park access, river and weather conditions, fire or haze, boat authority, feeding-station rules, and the operator's no-sighting terms

A Central Kalimantan river-and-forest route commonly reached through Pangkalan Bun and Kumai. Public itineraries can include feeding stations associated with long-running rehabilitation and research as well as wider park wildlife. Ask whether each observation is of a free-ranging wild, released, rehabilitated, or provisioned individual and follow the park's current rules.

Gunung Leuser landscape

Use the exact park sector, trail, rainfall, river, permit, guide, and current wildlife-health rules rather than a universal dry-season claim

A separate Sumatran forest route, not part of Borneo. Guided visitor areas can offer a chance to observe Sumatran orangutans, including individuals with different histories of human exposure. Choose a lawful route and guide, do not feed or touch, and do not market the restricted Tapanuli range as an alternative trek.

Komodo National Park

Apr-Dec

The only place in the world to see Komodo dragons in the wild. Accessible from Labuan Bajo.

Rinca Island

Apr-Dec

Part of Komodo National Park with easier dragon encounters than Komodo Island itself.
