Serengeti National Park Trip Reports
Real experiences from wildlife travellers
The Great Migration blew my mind
Watched hundreds of thousands of wildebeest cross the Mara River. Saw three leopards in one morning drive near Seronera. The balloon safari at sunrise was worth every penny.
Book your balloon safari months in advance, they sell out fast. Bring a 200-600mm lens if you have one. The central Serengeti is best in June and July for the migration build-up.

Serengeti National Park FAQ
The Great Migration is a year-round cycle. Wildebeest calve in the southern Serengeti from January to March, move northwest through April–June, cross the Mara River (the famous crossing) from July to October, then return south from November to December. The dramatic river crossings are concentrated in the northern Serengeti's Kogatende area.
Budget camping safaris start at $150–$250/day, mid-range lodges run $300–$500/day, and luxury tented camps cost $600–$2,000/day per person all-inclusive. Park fees alone are $70/day per person. A typical 4-day Serengeti safari totals $1,000–$6,000 per person depending on accommodation level, excluding international flights.
The Serengeti is roughly 10 times larger and feels more wild and remote, with the migration present for most of the year. The Masai Mara is smaller but offers incredible concentration of predators and the famous river crossings from August to October. Many travellers combine both, as they share the same ecosystem across the Tanzania-Kenya border.
Top luxury camps include &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas (mobile, follows the migration), Four Seasons Serengeti Lodge, and Singita Grumeti. For mid-range, Serengeti Serena Lodge and Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge are excellent. Budget travellers can stay at public campsites in Seronera for $30/night — basic but perfectly positioned for game drives.
Yes, self-driving is permitted but not commonly recommended. Roads are unpaved, signage is minimal, and a sturdy 4x4 is essential. You must arrange your own vehicle in Arusha, and breakdowns in the park can be serious. Most visitors choose guided safaris for expert tracking knowledge, safety, and the included vehicle and fuel.
June to October is peak dry season with excellent wildlife viewing across the park. January to February is ideal for calving season in the southern plains. December through March is also the best for bird watching. The long rains (April–May) bring fewer tourists and lower prices but muddy roads and limited access to some areas.
